Phosphate is the major ICF anion (-). Phosphate is involved in the promotion of energy storage as well as carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism. It acts as a hydrogen buffer, and helps maintain acid-base balance.
Hypophosphatemia is known to cause anorexia, muscle weakness, tremor, presthesia, osteomalacia, impaired red blood cell function with peripheral hypoxia.
Hyperphosphatemia usually does not produce recognized symptoms unless it is severe enough to result in secondary hypocalcemia with tetany or seizures.
